چکیده

In Arteara (Canary Island), a Holocene rock avalanche comprises accumulation of large reddish blocks which cover the Fataga ravine. This course, is entrenched into Phonolitic Formation, an alternating sequence lava flows and ignimbrites. The defines elongated deposit variable thickness. A low friction angle was deduced, related to easily weathered bedrock favorable rolling blocks. movement would have been dry granular flow with component saltation at head turbulent intermediate distal areas. varies widely in size structured bands polymodal distribution selection. geomechanical properties rocks involved vary substantially each block along longitudinal profile deposit. Schmidt Hammer rebound measured 233 show dispersion. Some facies differentiated blocks, not only by their appearance, but also index (R). different hardness reflects differences density porosity. zoning shows differential weathering depends on anisotropy turbulence, determines influence abrasion punching direct correlation bulk inverse distance source area.

[High prevalence of hypovitaminosis D in medical students in Gran Canaria, Canary Islands (Spain)].

BACKGROUND Vitamin D deficiency has been described in many diseases and indeed in the general population. However fewer reports have been published in young and healthy people. Vitamin D deficiency should not be found in medical students of the Canary Islands, because they have all the resources to avoid it. OBJECTIVE To estimate the prevalence of vitamin D deficiency in a population of medic...

Calculation of tunnel behavior in viscoelastic rock mass

Wall displacements and ground pressure acting on the lining of a tunnel increase with time. These time-dependent deformations are both due to face advance effect and to the time-dependent behavior of the rock mass.  Viscoelastic materials exhibit both viscous and elastic behaviors. Thorough this study, the effect of different linear viscoelastic models including Maxwell, Kelvin and Kelvin-Voigt...

On the generic placement of the narrow-range endemic 'Helix' arguineguinensis Seddon & Aparicio, 1998 from Gran Canaria (Canary Islands).

The nominal taxon 'Helix' arguineguinensis Seddon & Aparicio, 1998 is a narrow-range endemic from Gran Canaria (Canary Islands, Spain) known only from few localities in the vicinity of Argüineguin in the south-western part of the island (Mousson, 1874; Wollaston, 1878; Seddon & Aparicio, 1998). The narrow range of the taxon and potential threats to its habitat as a consequence of ongoing urbani...

Geomechanical rock properties of a basaltic volcano

In volcanic regions, reliable estimates of mechanical properties for specific volcanic events such as cyclic inflation-deflation cycles by magmatic intrusions, thermal stressing, and high temperatures are crucial for building accurate models of volcanic phenomena. This study focuses on the challenge of characterizing volcanic materials for the numerical analyses of such events. To do this, we e...

Occurrence of eight UV filters in beaches of Gran Canaria (Canary Islands). An approach to environmental risk assessment.

Due to the growing concern about human health effects of ultraviolet (UV) radiation, the use of UV filters has increased in recent decades. Unfortunately, some common UV filters are bioaccumulated in aquatic organisms and show a potential for estrogenic activity. The aim of the present study is to determine the presence of some UV filters in the coastal waters of six beaches around Gran Canaria...
